This is my truck with my new grille 2.5" guard, this bison guard saved my truck 4 times last year. Each time the damages would have been $7,000 to $12,000. And I would have been out a $1,000 deductible and & $5,700 to $17,100 in revenue. And would have had to report them to my insurance company. Or should I say companies. You get probationary ins after the first one and dropped after the second one. We haul feed directly to the farm and these trucks are put in challenging situations almost every day.
1) had to plow through a frozen snowbank to make the turn to his barn, No Damage.
2) had to plow through the edge of a large dirt pile they kindly left in my way, No Damage.
3) cruising along on hilly back roads late at night and a big old deer ran out in front of me. I hit it broad side a little to the passenger side off center , didn't even have time to react. It felt like a mild but solid recoil from say a .308 heavy rifle. I actually felt more when what ever was left of the unfortunate critter went under my right drive tires . Not even a scratch on bison or truck. 4) went off the road , into the median plowed into a heavy cable barrier. Road the cables for a pretty good distance shearing many, many metal supports, all the while the three cables were attempting to saw through the side of the bison guard. Finally the bison folded under the steer tires and stopped the truck. After the wreckers got the truck and trailer off the cables, all that was needed to get rolling again was a new steer tire and pick up my heroic little bison and put it gently in the back of my trailer with the steer tire that was ripped off it's wheel. Rather than deadhead home I stood the bison up against the back doors and picked up a load of feed headed towards home. As far as damages ; steer tire, left fender "still using it, haven't had a chance to mount the replacement yet , a few scratches in the stainless and paint , a bent cab extender a little scratch and ding in my
air filter housing.
Only real structural damage I can think of besides the bison guard would be the aluminum front spring hanger brackets. This is where any bumper would mount , two lower holes on each side. The truck's aluminum front bracket snapped off about a 1/2" above the holes. "What's kinda funny is at the crash site I distinctly remember the bisons steel bumper mount being solidly attached to the truck. And when the recovery guys finished they basically pointed and said there's the rest of your grill guard. " I think what happened is that they pulled at a hard angle and snapped the top bolts that go through the steel cross member at the front of the frame and the the aluminum just snapped next. By the way those front aluminum brackets are $1,200 each. Rather than go through all that labor and expense we secured the new bumper with the top row of bolts into the steel cross
member and the top of the aluminum brackets and the two center bolts that go where the tow hook used to mount and welded it to the truck. By the way, I just remembered,we didn't have the two heavy bolts that go where the tow hook used to mount when originally mounted it and I forgot to locate and buy them. Could explain why they snatched my bumper mount off. We made a point of getting them this time. LOL. We also toyed with the idea of adding side arms to the heavy steel bison mount, that come back to the unused hole in the middle of the aluminum front bracket. That hole takes a 4.5" X 5/8" bolt. But, we were happy with the weld install. In the future ,if we wanted to remove the bison mount , a plasma cutter should do the trick.
If the experiences I'm sharing with you are starting to sound like a commercial I apologize, but seldom In my life have I come across something that
impressed me to the point that I felt like I needed to say something about it. You know the old saying,"They don't make them like they used to" Bison Still Does! They build them one at a time, just for you, they build them beautiful, tough, and they fit perfectly. I used to think that this type of guard was ridiculously priced. $3500 , $5000, are you kidding me growing up I used to buy Chevy Chevelle's for $200 , my first new pickup truck cost $10,000 . Well yeah , its a pretty penny, but if you've been an owner operator for a while and you are blessed with the same kind of luck I have , writing checks like that, well, let's just say you almost don't even feel it anymore. I wish I had a bison guard 23 years ago. If I was able to avoid doing anything too stupid, I would probably still have the same one today . Think of all the lost revenue over the years and any incidents you may have
had. Even minor incidents cause major headaches, down time and expenses. When we swapped out my engine I put in as many hours chasing parts as my mechanic put in turning wrenches. I put almost 2000 miles on my pick up truck in two weeks and the farthest parts store I went to was around 22 miles away . I actually toyed with the idea of mounting the old tortured bison back on my truck and have the lettering guy make a sign for it. "I HAVE A BUMPER and I'M Not Afraid TO Use It ! Seriously though folks,3 years, 10 months , 2 weeks, 6 days, 22 hours 17 minutes, 37 seconds, "but really, who's counting, " and I am going to retire. This is my last truck! Thanks to Bison I still have a truck, and possibly the rest of my life.
A Sincere Thank You, to everyone at Bison .
